Interests: Urban neighborhoods, gentrification, racial and socio-economic segregation/integration.
Projects: I am examining three Northeast Portland neighborhoods that
are racially and socio-economically mixed. Specifically, I am analyzing
the extent to which residents interact with each other, participate in
neighborhood organizations, and view neighborhood changes. This project
has several facets that have already been completed: (1) 646 surveys of
residents, (2) 111 follow-up interviews with residents who participated
in the resident surveys, (3) 88 surveys of businesses and organizations
on Alberta Street, and (4) 76 surveys of businesses on organizations in
the Eliot neighborhood. Parts of this research have been funded
by the National Science Foundation (Sociology), National Science Foundation (Research Experiences for Undergraduates), the American Sociological
Association's Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline, and various
grants from Portland State University. |
